What do you consider the greatest triumph of your life? (Asked by Maggie Gyllenhaal) |
||||
At the risk of sounding like a beauty-pageant contestant, it is my family, my home life. Our family life is a very happy one, very progressive and enriching. It lends real purpose and support to all the other aspects of my life.
When in your life have you been the most disappointed? (Asked by Maggie Gyllenhaal)
When my father passed away [when she was 10]. That was the greatest, not so much disappointment, but greatest loss. The largest void I have ever felt. Any joy I have had in my life since, I'm disappointed that he wasn't here to share it.
Have you ever lived alone? (Asked by Maggie Gyllenhaal)
Except for living with my sister [at one point], I lived alone practically my entire adult life. It suited my personality very well. The only thing I like better is living with my husband.
Who are your favorite bands? (Asked by Kirsten Dunst)
I enjoy a variety of different types of music. If I had to pick one group, I would say Dave Matthews Band.
What is your favorite place to vacation? (Asked by Julia Stiles)
I love Italy. Every place I have ever been there has been lovely. I also think Ireland is amazing. It's filled with such beautiful landscapes, and I have great friends there whom I love to visit.
What era of fashion would you like to see return? (Asked by Marcia Gay Harden)
I would like to see the '40s return as a stylethat Katharine Hepburn, relaxed sophistication.
What quality does Katherine, the professor you play in "Mona Lisa Smile", possess that you'd like to adopt? (Asked by Ginnifer Goodwin)
I like her drive, her complete focus.
What makes you feel nostalgic? (Asked by Laura Allen)
Music can make me feel very nostalgic and also certain smellsbeing outside, the fresh smells of a season.
Do you feel the notion of a gentleman conflicts with modern-day thinking or still has a place in today's society? (Asked by Laura Allen)
Being a gentleman will never not have a place in the world.
If you could bring only three items to a desert island, what would you choose? (Asked by the journalist)
Surfboard, Labello lip balm and an unlimited supply of water. And my husband.
Who are the first three people you call to share good news with?
My husband (although he is usually with me); my sister, Lisa; and my mother.
If you could have dinner with two people who are no longer alive, who would they be?
My grandmother, because I have a lot of questions for her. And the guy who really discovered the Americas, Amerigo Vespucci. To look out at the ocean and to search for something, to be an explorer, is the ultimate. [Amerigo Vespucci came to the Americas seven years after Columbus (officially), but he was on the mainland of the South American continent at least 14 months before Columbus was.]
How do you most like to spend a Saturday night?
Maybe dinner with friends, but I usually have an early night.
What is your favorite room in your house?
My living room because it is comfortable and relaxing, and there is room for all my friends when we get together.
What books do you love? | ||||
One of my favorite books is Red Earth and Pouring Rain, a novel by Vikram Chandra.
What is your favorite food?
Mango. And my favorite sandwich is apple and sharp cheddar cheese on Irish soda bread.
What television shows do you enjoy?
One of my favorites is Match Game on Game Show Network. I also got sucked into The Bachelor with Andrew Firestone, although I stumbled onto [the show] a bit late.
Which painters do you most admire?
Painting is a talent I have enormous appreciation for. My favorite painter is Edith Vonnegut and I have a pull toward Magritte, Francesco Clemente, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Picasso.
If you didn't act, what career would you have pursued instead?
Teaching because I had a few great, freethinking teachers who had a profound effect on me. I think that is an incredible talent.
A character in "Mona Lisa Smile" says: A good wife lets her husband think that everything's his idea, even when it's not. To what extend do you believe this is true?
It is silly to think in any kind of relationship that that kind of manipulation needs to go on. |
